SmugMug (Summer 2013)

Pros More customizable than competing services. Lets you sell photos. Full screen slideshows. Attractive new gallery themes. Drag-and-drop photo organizer.

Cons No free accounts. Almost no community features. No Face tagging. Can't share gallery to Facebook. No creative common designations. Bottom Line SmugMug offers customizable online photo galleries with new design choices and better photo organization tools, but it's lost community features and remains less intuitive than competitors.

By Michael Muchmore

In my last review of SmugMug, I noted that its interface looked a bit tired and outdated. Luckily, the photo-hosting site has recently undergone a much-needed face-lift, which does a nice job of bringing it into the Web of the twenty-tens. This update not only brings a new photo organization tool sporting drag-and-drop that makes for a definite improvement in working with the site, but it also offers slick new photo gallery options. Let's see if these changes are enough for SmugMug to win the honor of becoming your photo-hosting site.

Compare Selected

If you're looking for a customizable gallery site for your digital photos, or want to try to sell images online, SmugMug is a very capable option. But unlike the best-known photo hosting and sharing site, Flickr, there's no free option with SmugMug: Though you won't see a price list until after you've created a trial account, you'll pay a minimum of $40 a year for a basic account with unlimited uploading, and $150 a year for a Portfolio account, which adds commerce options like the ability to sell digital download and collect profits via electronic transfer.

It's hard to compete with the terabyte of free storage that you get with Flickr, and impossible to compete with the huge photo-sharing community on Yahoo's photo site, but some photographers will overlook the cost, preferring SmugMug's totally ad-free presentation and the ability to customize their gallery pages. Existing SmugMug account holders have the options of sticking with the old interface, previewing the new one privately, or switching over wholesale. If you do make the switch, you'll lose any advanced customizations you made in the old version, and once you do migrate, there's no going back.

Signup and Setup
SmugMug does offer a free 15-day trial, and thankfully, this doesn't require credit card info. You can sign up either by entering and email address or through Facebook Connect. Right when you first sign up, you get a personalized URL in the form yourname.smugmug.com. Next, you name your gallery by choosing a category for it (over 60 choices, from Airplanes to Zoos, with Births and Funerals in between.) Or you can create a category name of your own. The gallery gets its own URL, using a slash after your main one.

Your homepage in SmugMug by default shows your user picture and any biographical info you've supplied, followed by thumbnails for your galleries. You can add horizontal entries for slideshows, individual large photo views, communities, a keyword tag cloud, or most popular or recent photos. You can easily move any of these sections up and down on your homepage—now using drag-and-drop. It's more configurable than Flickr or Picasa's, but one basic behavior I prefer in those two competitors is that the main site URL takes you to your own gallery dashboard page; in SmugMug, it takes you to SmugMug's advertisement page.

Uploading
Like Flickr, SmugMug offers drag-and-drop uploading on its site if you're using an HTML5-compliant browser. SmugMug didn't let me add tags, assign photosets, or rotate photos in the Web uploader the way Flickr did, but it does show a progress bar and let you pause uploading. Both services give you the option of uploading via an email address in addition to the Web method.

If you use software like Adobe Photoshop Lightroom or Apple Aperture, though, none of that matters, since both services have included publish exporters. SmugMug does offer a good deal of third-party integration, but most apps, such as the popular iPhone image editors are more likely to have built-in uploading to Facebook and Flickr than to SmugMug, and Flickr's flourishing App Garden makes SmugMug's look tiny.

After you upload images to a SmugMug gallery, you're simply taken to the gallery page. Here I could rate or comment on a photo, and a wrench icon below it offered editing and organizing options. The Photo Details choice here let me add a title, caption, and keywords. The only organize choices were Make a Copy, Hide, and Replace. An even bigger missing tagging component is SmugMug's lack of face tagging, for which both Picasa and Flickr offer strong implementations.

Velocity Micro Edge Z55 (Summer 2013)

Pros New Haswell processor and Nvidia graphics. Lots of room for maintenance and upgrades.

Cons Plain looking case. Bottom Line The Velocity Micro Edge Z55 isn't the flashiest gaming desktop, but it combines top components, like a fourth-generation Intel Core i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 GPU, with a healthy feature set for excellent performance and value.

By Brian Westover

When shopping for a serious gaming rig, it's easy to spend a lot of money on fancy designs and flashy features. But what really makes a difference on the gaming grid isn't an embellished tower case or funky internal design; it's hardware. The Velocity Micro Edge Z55 updates the single-card mid-tower with Intel's new fourth-generation Core i7-4470k quad-core processor and Nvidia's powerful new GeForce GTX 780 graphics card. It's not necessarily cheap, but it delivers exactly what gamers are looking for, performance that will lead them to victory.

Compare Selected

Design and Features
The simple but stylish Edge Z55 dresses up the mid-tower PC with a sleek black plastic front panel that opens to reveal a tray-loading optical drive (an LG BD-ROM/DVD+-RW combo). The tower measures 18.2 by 9.2 by 20.7 inches (HWD)—just a little larger than the Digital Storm Virtue—but still small enough to tuck out of the way under a desk.

On top of the front panel, easily accessible, are four USB ports (two USB 3.0, two USB 2.0) and jacks for headphone and microphone. On the rear of the tower, you'll find several more USB ports (six USB 3.0, four USB 2.0), along with two Ethernet ports, connections for audio, and several display outputs—HDMI, DisplyPort (both full size and mini DisplayPort), and DVI output.

A window on the left side gives you a view inside, letting you see the major components—like an Nvidia GeForce GTX780 graphics card, a 750-watt power supply, air cooling, and the Asus Z87-Deluxe motherboard. Built into the motherboard is integrated 802.11ac Wi-Fi, along with Bluetooth 4.0 and 3.0+HS, letting you connect all of your wireless headsets or peripherals. An external Wi-Fi antenna gives you excellent reception, and a magnetic mount means you can slap it on the side of the tower or to any metal on your desk. If you need to get into the tower for maintenance and upgrades, it's as easy as removing two thumbscrews at the back and sliding of the side panel.

Inside, you'll also find plenty of storage, with a 2TB, 7,200rpm hard drive providing storage for you game installs and media library, and two speedy 128GB solid-state drives (SSD) paired in RAID0 for 256GB of flash memory, offering short boot times and zippy performance. Even with all that room, Velocity Micro leaves the drives alone—aside from preinstalling Windows 8 (64-bit) and drivers for the graphics card and other components, there's nothing on the drives. Velocity Micro covers the Edge Z55 with a one-year warranty on parts and labor, with lifetime phone support.

Performance
Armed with Intel's fourth-generation Core i7-4470K quad-core processor—the same processor found in the Digital Storm Virtue—with overclocking up to 4.4GHz (up from the 3.5GHz base) and paired with 16GB of RAM. With the new processor, the Edge Z55 offers strong performance, cranking through PCMark 7 with a score of 7,295 points, topping almost every comparable system from the previous generation, including the Editors' Choice HP Envy Phoenix h9-1320t(4,033 points) and Maingear Potenza Super Stock (5,356 points). A Cinebench score of 9.64 points also puts it at the head of the pack, with the closest competitor being the similarly equipped Digital Storm Virtue (9.59 points). The Edge Z55 also finished our processor intensive multimedia tests with leading scores, finishing Handbrake in 29 seconds and Photoshop in 2 minutes 49 seconds.

The overclocked processor is joined by a potent Nvidia GeForce GTX780 GPU, with 3GB of dedicated memory. The results speak for themselves, with better than playable framerates in our gaming tests—83 frames per second in Aliens vs. Predator and 75 frames per second in Heaven, both at full resolution and high detail settings.

The Velocity Micro Edge Z55 offers a solid mid-range gaming desktop that packs in a lot of features—a Blu-ray drive, 2TB hard drive, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth—on top of the a fourth-generation Intel Core i7 processor and a shiny new Nvidia graphics card. It's a combination that should serve you well on the gaming grid now, and will continue to feel fast in the future. It can't match the affordability of the Editors' Choice HP Phoenix h9-1320t, but it holds its own against other top performers, like the Digital Storm Virtue and the V3 Gaming Traverse.

Makeup Wars: Summer Foundation.

My summer makeup routine is very different from the rest of the year. I like to go lighter all over, as in wear less (lighter) makeup, especially when it comes to foundation. I don't require the heavier coverage that I normally do in the winter, nor do I like it when it is hot out. I found that layering two products works best for me.

This summer I am layering Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream and It Cosmetics Celebration Foundation to get the perfect summer coverage and look for me.

Foundation + Powder for Summer | Beautiful Makeup Search

Moisture Surge CC Cream glides on over my skin as it protects it with SPF 30, which is obviously super important to have in your complexion perfector for summer. I like to apply the CC Cream with my fingertips. I start at the center of my face and blend out, sort of patting it into my skin. Alone, it offers beautiful, light coverage. It has a lightweight texture that is definitely breathable. After the CC Cream sets into my skin for a few minutes, I take a large fluffy powder brush and swirl it around into the Celebration Foundation. I brush it over my face, concentrating on my forehead, nose and chin, then onto my cheeks to and blend it all in. I don't use a ton of the powder, just enough to set the CC Cream, deepen the color a bit and blend everything together. Together, it lasts all through the day as it makes my skin look like a more perfect kind of natural for summer.

Take a look at what my beauty friends use to perfect their complexion in the summer.

Summer Must: Urban Decay De-slick Mattifying Powder.

Even those of use with dry skin get shiny in the summer. Whether it is oil, sweat or just some shine for no specific reason, I am not a fan of looking greasy. Seriously. Who likes shiny skin? Urban Decay doesn't and has just relaunched this favorite powder to get rid of all things shiny. Meet De-Slick Mattifying Powder.

Urban Decay De-slick Mattifying Powder

De-Slick does what it sounds like it does. It gets rid of that un-flattering slick shine. It does this with rice powder. It is super lightweight and super absorbent, so not only does it banish shine, but it actually absorbs oil. What is really great about De-Slick is that it comes in one universal shade good for every skin tone. Really, it is. Don't let the pale lavender color scare you. It goes on invisibly and simply gets rid of shine and controls it all throughout the day.

To apply, you can use the enclosed sponge, but I like to use a fluffy powder brush to do the trick. De-Slick never looks cakey or dull. It honestly doesn't even look like I am wearing powder after I apply it. All it does is absorb the shine.

De-Slick Mattifying Powder sells for $32.00 and is available at Sephora, ULTA, select Macy's and urbandecay.com.

10th Annual Top-10 Summer Reading List for Business Leaders

Jeff Kudisch, Assistant Dean of Corporate Relations and Managing Director of the Office of Career Services

Emotional Intelligence 2.0
by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves, 2009

“As bestselling author and thought leader Patrick Lencioni noted in the opening pages, Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves ‘can drastically change the way you think about success.’ I concur and strongly encourage those seeking leadership positions to read this book,” says Jeff Kudisch, assistant dean of corporate relations and managing director of the Office of Career Services. “Emotional Intelligence (EQ) continues to receive increasing attention in the workplace, especially given evidence that executives who possess strong EQ skills seem to emerge as the best performers relative to their counterparts who rely heavily on their strong IQ. There are plenty of brilliant people who have never made it because they lack the social savvy needed to develop strong relationships, build trust and inspire others,” says Kudisch. “In addition to being an easy read, Emotional Intelligence 2.0 includes access to a free online assessment tool, the Emotional Intelligence Appraisal, which will help you create a baseline against gauging self-improvements.”

P.K. Kannan, Ralph J. Tyser Professor of Marketing Science

Who owns the future?
by Jaron Lanier, 2013

“Who Owns the Future? by Jaron Lanier provides a contrarian’s view of the benefits of technology, digitization, and ‘big data,’ which is both provocative and controversial,” says P.K. Kannan, Ralph J. Tyser Professor of Marketing Science. “Lanier’s main argument is that the riches derived from network connectivity, digitization and crowd-sourcing has benefited just a few major corporations (which he calls Siren Servers), concentrating wealth in the hands of a few, and decimating the middle-class over time. All of this may sound very socialistic, but the interesting ideas emerge when Lanier speculates how network technology can be leveraged to benefit all the network participants for their input. This is could mean customers getting payment for their online reviews, for their ‘Likes,’ their crowd-sourced ideas – all with the help of micro-payments. What implications this has for customer and citizen privacy and the market for information is a fascinating discourse. A must-read for all ‘big data’ fans!”

Stash one of these in your beach bag or carry-on—here’s the 2013 list of annual summer reading recommendations from faculty and experts at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.

“The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine,” by Michael Lewis (2011).

New York-based Convene is staking out 15,000 square feet in what used to be a seafood restaurant in Tysons Corner.

“It’s entertaining and informative about the products and participants in the financial crisis. Financial markets and shadow banking have become rather convoluted but Lewis is able to provide an explanation of the industry while maintaining interest, even for those not in finance.”

— Mike Faulkender,
associate professor of finance

“Influence,” by Robert Cialdini (2009).

“The classic reference on how to sell. Based on rigorous academic research, the book helps one understand why people say ‘yes’ and how to apply this information.”

— Brent Goldfarb, associate
professor of management and
entrepreneurship

“Lean In,” by Sheryl Sandberg (2013).

“Every business leader should read Sandberg’s ‘Lean In.’ Women are changing the workplace and this is a must-read for professional women to feel confident and inspired to take their place at the table, but also for men to understand the positive impact. This is not ‘The Feminine Mystique’ — this is a ‘how-to guide’ on improving workplace dynamics and capitalizing on the talented, educated women in the workforce. Women are a rising tide that will absolutely lift all ships.”

— Elana Fine, managing director of the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship

“The Power of Consistency: Prosperity Mindset Training for Sales and Business Professionals,” by Weldon Long (2013).

“Long teaches his readers how to follow a four-step process to success by, among other things, learning how your life reflects your thoughts and the words you use during self-talk. Long says the thoughts and beliefs we consistently have determine our level of success. This is a good book especially for new graduates and younger executives. You’ll appreciate the author’s incredible story of going from homelessness, alcoholism and prison to success in life and business.”

— Ken White, associate dean of MBA and M.S. Programs

“Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking,” by Susan Cain (2012).

“This book is not only addressed to introverts like me, but explains introverts to the two-thirds of the population that is extroverted. Cain explores the ‘extrovert ideal’ and gives examples of how society undervalues introverts. Introverts prefer listening to speaking. Introverts are also creative and innovative, but generally not good at self-promotion, and prefer working individually to working on a team. Cain explores the scientific research and provides stories about introversion and famous introverts — Dr. Seuss, Einstein, Proust and Chopin. Introverts and extroverts are compatible work partners — the extroverts just need to remember that introverts need ‘think’ time and time alone to recharge. The introverts need to remember that extroverts are recharged by interacting with others.”
