Toshiba PX35t-A2306 All-in-One Desktop

Pros HDMI-In. Good performance. Minimal styling. Fits in to most decor.

Cons No Blu-ray. Odd shaped mouse. No 5GHz 802.11 Wi-Fi support. Some pre-loaded software. Bottom Line The Toshiba PX35t-A2306 All-in-One Desktop is a solid choice if you're in the market for a Windows 8 touch PC. However, though sufficient, there's not a lot to elevate it enough above the pack.

The Toshiba PX35t-A2306 All-in-One Desktop ($1,191.99 list) is a solid, well priced Windows 8 touch PC. If you get one, it will serve you well for the five to seven years (or more) that most people hold on to PCs these days. It's better than many, but not quite enough become the next top dog among the mainstream all-in-one desktops.

Design and Features
The PX35t-A2306 is a fairly understated all-in-one desktop, it looks very much like a 23-inch HDTV, and its 1,920 by 1,080 resolution touch screen ensures that you can watch full HD videos in native resolution. The screen takes up most of the front façade, with just enough bezel around the screen to activate off-screen gestures like brining up the Charms menu in Windows 8. This is a more responsive and versatile senor than the IR touch display on the HP Pavilion TouchSmart 23-F260XT AIO ($999). There's a silver bar at the bottom of the screen suggesting a speaker bar, but the built-in speakers with DTS sound are bottom firing. Sound from these stereo speakers won't fill a room, but they are adequate for most PC uses. The system is on a stand, which gives the user a spot to stow the keyboard under the screen. The screen has a decent tilt for sitting and standing users, but no height adjustment, and you can't lay the system flat for touch use. The current Editors' Choice Vizio 27-inch All-in-One Touch PC (CA27T-B1) ($1,549) goes the other direction with styling that stands out.

The PX35t-A2306 has an ultrabook-class Intel Core i5-3230M processor, 8GB of system memory, and a 1TB hard drive. With the 8GB of memory and 1TB hard drive, you have enough extra overhead to make sure the average user won't find herself in a situation where she runs out of either for a good five years. Also adding to the longevity are the system's DVD burner and HDMI-in port. The DVD burner will come in handy those rare times you have to re-rip a CD so you can put it on your smartphone, and the HDMI-in port will help extend the utility of the built in display. You can hook a cable box up to the HDMI in port or use it with a laptop or desktop PC once the internal components have inevitably become obsolete.

The PX35t-A2306 comes with a few pre-loaded utilities, including Amazon, Toshiba Book Place. WildTangent games, Stumbleupon, eBay, iHeartRadio, Netflix, Vimeo, Skype, Hulu Plus, a Deal app, Evernote Touch, Norton Internet Security (30-days), News Place, Origin (games store), a trial for Microsoft Office, and a few other Toshiba utilities. While par for the course for a retail system, budget an hour or so to get rid of the ones you don't use, or be prepared to see their tiles every time you boot your PC. The PX35t-A2306 comes with a one-year warranty.

Performance
Toshiba PX35t-A2306 All-in-One Desktop The PX35t-A2306 exhibits average to above average performance for an all-in-one desktop, thanks to its Core i5-3230M processor with Intel HD Graphics 4000, 8GB of memory, and 7,200rpm drive. It lags the Vizio CA 27T-B1, since the more expensive Vizio has a Core i7 processor and a caching SSD. Likewise, the Asus Transformer AIO (P1801-B037K) ($1,299) and Apple iMac 21.5-inch (Late 2012) ($1,299) both have Nvidia discrete graphics for better 3D performance. That said, overall the PX35t-A2306 has the power to keep most moderately fussy users happy for several years of service life.

The Toshiba PX35t-A2306 is a nice all-in-one desktop. It has enough power and features to keep most users happy for the five to seven years that they would keep the system before considering an upgrade. That said, other systems like the Editors' Choice Vizio CA27T-B1 and Apple iMac have better features and performance that outshine the unassuming Toshiba. Solid, yes, but the PX35t-A2306 doesn't surpass the Vizio CA27T-B1 or Apple iMac 21.5-inch enough to get a higher score, nor the top spot.

Microsoft spends a lot of time thinking about how people use PCs, from the organization of an operating system to the design of a tablet. There's a lot of attention to detail that goes into a Microsoft product, but one category that many overlook is the keyboard. Microsoft's newest PC peripheral, the Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop, shows an attention to detail, awareness of design and style, and dedication to functionality that makes it our Editors' Choice for wireless keyboards, ergonomic or otherwise.

Ergonomic Desk Set
The Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop is the latest entry in Microsoft's line of ergonomic PC peripherals, now with a three-piece desktop set, consisting of a keyboard, numeric keypad, and an ergonomic mouse. In addition to upgrading the ergonomics of your workspace, the Sculpt trio also looks great, with a sleek new look and clutter-free wireless design.

All three devices connect to your Windows or Mac PC via 2.4GHz wireless signal through a shared USB receiver. That shared receiver also means that, unlike a wired keyboard and mouse, you'll only be using one USB port on your PC for all three devices. The mouse and main keyboard are each powered with two AA and AAA batteries, respectively, and the separate keypad uses a CR2430 button battery. All three come with new batteries already installed; you just need to pull out the little plastic strips that keep them from connecting.

The Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop is also made with Windows 8 in mind, with built-in features that take advantage of shortcuts and commands to provide a faster, more intuitive Windows experience. All three devices are plug-n-play (compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux PCs, but many features are Windows only), but for more fine-tuned control, you can download Mouse and Keyboard Center 2.2 for Windows 8 (Windows only). Microsoft covers the Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop with a three year warranty.

Keyboard and Keypad
Designed from the ground up for use with Windows 8, the keyboard and mouse both feature a few distinctive features that streamline your Windows 8 use. The keyboard features built-in media controls and several hotkeys that pull up specific functions on the Windows Charms Bar, while the mouse features a bright blue Windows thumb button, letting you jump back to the start screen without having to look down at the keyboard.

It's also worth noting the peculiarities of the function buttons (Escape and F1-F12). The keys themselves are half the size of the regular chiclet keys, and rounded to provide a visual and tactile distinction from the rest of the keyboard. Instead of a "Fn" button allowing you quick access to extra functions, the keyboard uses a slider switch, which switches the keys from standard F1-F12 functionality to media and Charms functionality. While this might make it a bit difficult to swap from one use to the other, it also makes it easy to select to function set of your choice and defaulting to those functions until you manually flip the switch.

The "manta ray" design combines the curves of the Microsoft Sculpt Comfort Keyboard with a divided layout similar to the Smartfish Engage Keyboard, but without the automatic angle adjustment. To compensate a bit for the adjustment to the two-halves design, the keys along the split are slightly larger, helping you to touch-type just as quickly without having to fumble into the gap in the middle.

The two halves of the keyboard are angled into a slightly domed shape, putting the wrists and forearms into a very natural position. Along the bottom edge of the keyboard is a padded wrist rest that follows the same contours and provides a comfortable support. The keyboard can also be raised and the angle adjusted thanks to a plastic riser that magnetically latches to the bottom of the keyboard, raising the palmrest up and changing the pitch for an alternative position.

Along with the distinctive ergonomic keyboard is a wireless numeric keypad, providing ten-key functionality in a self-contained device. It's similar to the two-part design seen on the Microsoft Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard 6000, and the detached keypad offers some ergonomic benefit itself. You can either position the numeric pad immediately next to the keyboard, as it would be on the traditional office keyboard, or it can be positioned anywhere else within the range of the wireless USB, letting you angle it, stack it on a pile of papers, pick it up and use it like a calculator, or enter numbers one-handed, like it's a TV remote. The fact that it's separate and wireless makes it extremely flexible, which in turn makes it far more ergonomically sound than the flat design might suggest.

Both keyboard and keypad use chiclet keys with scissor switches, about the same as you'll find on the average laptop. The keys are extremely quiet, so there's none of the clickity-clack noise you would get with a mechanical keyboard. The one complaint I might have is that the key lettering is pad printed, meaning that the individual letters are like stickers affixed to the surface of the keycap. Compared with laser etched keys, the lettering will wear off much sooner, but it's not uncommon for consumer keyboards.

Mouse
The mouse, which is also sold alone as the Sculpt Ergonomic Mouse, has a very geometric-looking design, with an overall spherical shape and an indentation serving as a thumb rest. The raised rounded shape provides plenty of support, sitting taller than most, ostensibly preventing drag between your forearm or hand and the surface of your desk. It also puts the wrist at a more neutral, almost like the Evoluent VerticalMouse 4, but without the vertical orientation. With the scooped thumb cradle, it's almost like the Hippus HandShoe Mouse (with LightClick), providing similar support for the entire hand.

The mouse sports the usual right and left buttons, along with a clickable scroll wheel, and two thumb buttons. Unlike most mice, these thumb buttons aren't forward and back for browser navigation, but a back button and Windows button, which will be a real boon to anyone using Windows 8 or 8.1. The back button also has the option of being reprogrammed with you choice of commands, such as the Alt or Tab buttons, or macros for copy, paste, undo, and others. The mouse features an optical sensor with 1000 dpi tracking, and will work on most surfaces, with the exception of reflective surfaces like glass.

Performance
Using the Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop at my own desk for a week really highlighted what does and doesn't quite work on the shapely desk set. The wave design of the keyboard does reduce wrist discomfort, but it comes with a trade off in that you need to relearn your keyboard layout. The split design may require some relearning if you commonly use your right hand on the left-hand side of the keyboard or vice-versa, and touch typists may be thrown by the odd size of keys along the right/left divide. That said, once you've grown accustomed to the new shape and layout, the benefits are clear. The neutral wrist position is much easier on the wrists, and alleviated my own carpal tunnel discomfort while using the keyboard.

The separate numeric keypad is great, with the wireless design letting you position it with ease. The mouse is also beneficial, but the spherical design felt a bit weird, even when compared to other ergonomic mice. The regular mouse functions all worked exactly as they should, and the thumb accessible Windows button is a feature I'd love to see added to other mice.

The Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop combines some of the best ergonomic features with Windows 8 features that will power-up your regular PC use in addition to making it more comfortable. Throw in the simplicity of wireless and a distinctive, stylish design, and it's not just one of the best ergonomic devices we've seen, it's also our new Editors' Choice for wireless keyboards, replacing the Logitech K810 Bluetooth Illuminated Keyboard.

ShadowProtect Desktop won't dazzle you with its looks or its feature list, but it makes itself indispensable through its speed, reliability, and single-minded attention to backing up and restoring your system and your files. Unlike rival products that look like the kind of Swiss Army Knife that can get you imprisoned for life if you bring it the airport, ShadowProtect Desktop is focused on creating and using disk images—files that contain a complete snapshot of a partition on your disk, which you can either use to restore your entire system in a single operation, or open in a window on your desktop—as if it were a real disk—so you can explore or copy individual files and folders.

After reviewing many rival products, I still use ShadowProtect for my regular backups. And I'll describe in a moment how I used it to solve some Windows problems that nothing else could solve. It's been our Editors' Choice ever since it appeared, and we haven't found any reason to change our opinion.

ShadowProtect Desktop 5 is a reduced version of StorageCraft's business and enterprise-level backup solutions, which include such high-level features such as cloud-based storage and network-wide backup control panels. Even the basic Desktop app is designed for efficiency more than for consumer-level friendliness, but any moderately knowledgeable consumer can manage it easily. All you need to know is some basic knowledge of how to navigate the Windows file system in a File/Open dialog box.

Getting Started
Here are the basics. Start up the app; make sure that the Wizards tab is showing in the main interface, click Backup, and follow the prompts to select a partition to backup and a location where you want to save the backup. Typically, you'll choose an external USB disk, but the destination-selection dialog lets you navigate to another system or storage device on your network and use that instead. If you're making backups for convenience instead of safety—for example, if you want quick access to older versions of your files—you can save the backup to another partition on your main hard disk, but do this only if you don't mind losing your backups and your originals if your main hard disk fails.

The next dialog lets you schedule your backup, and you may want to change the default setting, which makes a full backup every Sunday and then makes "incremental" backups (backups that save only files changed since the last full backup) once every hour on weekdays. The next option lets you encrypt your backups and click on an "Advanced" button for some crucial options that you probably shouldn't ignore.

The Advanced option that I use most is on the Retention tab in the Advanced dialog; this lets me tell the app to delete older backups after new ones are made; I typically save two full weekly backups, and let the program delete older ones, but you can save as many backups your storage location can hold. Then look over a summary page that reminds you of the options you've chosen, and click Finish to let the app do its job. You can close the main window, and let the app do its work in the background, so you don't have to think it about it again until you need it for a recovery.

Codependent no more: OneNote for iPad liberated from desktop app

While still afflicted with reticence over providing a native iPad version of Office, Microsoft has updated OneNote for iPad in a way that, according to the company, makes it independent from its desktop counterpart.

Specifically, note-takers can now create notebooks and create, delete, and rename notebook sections on their OneNote for iPad.

The new features come in response to requests from users who wanted to do "everything from within OneNote" in the iPad, Avneesh Kohli, a program manager on the OneNote team at Microsoft, wrote in a blog post Friday.

With this update, Microsoft also tried to address typing latency experienced by people using OneNote for iPad in Japanese, and cut in more than half the download size of the iPhone version of the app. Also new is automatic detection that a user is typing a list, so that the formatting doesn't have to be done manually.

Despite massive interest in a full-fledged, native version of Office for the iPad, Microsoft has resisted, and the unwillingness is most likely due to a concern that taking this step would benefit iOS and hurt Windows 8.

The porting of OneNote to iOS is an exception, along with several others including SkyDrive. Microsoft does offer browser-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote via Office Web Apps, and it recently improved this suite to work better on iPads.

A few months ago, Microsoft came out with a version of Office for the iPhone, but it's only available to people with an Office 365 subscription, and the feature set of the applications has been criticized as limited and inconvenient to use.

Google seeks to marry desktop and cloud with new Chrome apps

Google has wheeled out a new type of application for its Chrome browser that according to the company combines the best of desktop and cloud software.

Equating them to tablet- and smartphone-like apps for desktops and laptops, Google said on Thursday that they mix "the speed, security, and flexibility" of the Web with the "functionality" of software installed on devices.

"These apps are more powerful than before and can help you get work done, play games in full-screen and create cool content all from the Web," wrote Google engineering director Erik Kay in a blog post.

An initial set of this new type of app is live now in the Chrome Web Store for Chrome OS and Windows computers. They'll be available for MacOS and Linux "soon."

Google first announced this type of "packaged app" several months ago, and some have been available to people using the Chrome browser in its "developer" version. Now they're available for the first time for people who use the browser's "stable" version.

Key characteristics of this new type of app, which Google refers to as "packaged apps," include their ability to be used and store data offline, their limited display of extraneous browser elements like buttons and tabs, and their capacity to tap into the cloud to access and save documents and other content in Google Drive and other similar cloud storage services.

Google also highlights their ability to "play nice" with peripherals linked to devices via USB, Bluetooth and other connections and to display desktop notifications for users.

Other features include background "silent" updates and syncing with various devices so people can continue their tasks when they switch devices.

Also new is the Chrome App Launcher for Windows, which will show up on people's computers when the install one of these apps.

"It lives in your taskbar and launches your apps into their own windows, outside of Chrome, just like your desktop apps," Kay wrote.

The biggest beneficiaries here will be owners of Chrome OS computers, said Forrester Research analyst J.P. Gownder, referring to the Chromebook laptops and Chromebox desktops made by Google, Samsung, Acer, and other PC makers.

"For Chrome OS to succeed, Google had to beef up its offline capabilities and let the OS interface with the hardware at a deeper level," he said.

With this improvement for Chrome browser apps, Chrome OS becomes a more viable alternative to mainstream OSes like Windows and Mac OS, according to Gownder.

What remains to be seen is whether Google will be able to entice a critical mass of developers to build these packaged apps for Chrome.

It will be key for the development tools to be easy to use, because developers already have their hands full writing code for a variety of desktop, tablet and smartphone OSes, he said.

Meanwhile, Al Hilwa, an IDC analyst, said Chrome OS apps are strategic for Google because the company wants to make the Web platform viable for the most complex and sophisticated apps.

"The key challenge for the Web ecosystem is the maturity of tools and developer skills in the area," Hilwa said via email.

Makerbot's desktop scanner for 3D printers will cost you $1,400

A 3D scanner that replicates in digital form a small object in as little as 12 minutes for a 3D printer is now on sale.

Makerbot said its new Digitizer 3D Scanner will retail for $1,400. The company is charging an additional $150 for MakerBot Digitizer MakerCare, a service and support program.

What makes Makerbot's 3D Digitizer different from other consumer 3D printing technologies is that it does not require any experience with 3D modeling software. A user places an object on a turntable, presses a button, and a camera and two lasers scan the contours of the object, creating a digital file that can then be used to print an original object on a MakerBot 3D printer, as well as other third-party printers.

MakerBot unveiled the MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner, a fast and simple way to create 3D models.

The Digitizer 3D Scanner can scan physical objects that are up to 8 inches in diameter, 8 inches tall and weigh up to 6.6 pounds.

The scanner creates a file that can be printed out on a MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer and outputs standard 3D design file formats that can be modified using third-party modeling programs, such as Autodesk's free software MeshMixer.

"Bringing the MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner into the world has been a big goal of ours this year," Bre Pettis, MakerBot's CEO, said in a statement.

Pettis said the Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner is aimed at early adopters, educators, creative hobbyists, 3D sculptors, organic modelers, designers, and architects who want to be "the first to become an expert in Desktop 3D Scanning."

MakerBot also published some qualifiers on its FAQ page telling potential buyers that it's not able to copy highly intricate objects and suggesting that users not expect "too much" from it.

"Expectations should be realistic. You will not be able to, for example, scan a hamburger and then eat the digital design," the company's FAQ page states.

The MakerBot Digitizer 3D Scanner can turn physical objects into digital designs.
